Symbols
You can add symbols in Inkscape by using the Symbols dialog (Ctrl+Shift+Y) to drag and drop existing symbols, or by using the text tool (T) to insert Unicode characters via Ctrl+U followed by the four-digit code. To create your own custom symbols, draw an object, make its fill unset, and then add it to the Symbols dialog from the menu.
